The “SAINTS” Rock Toronto – JPAA Canada 30th Anniversary Dance

Posted on 16 November 2014 by admin

It was a night, and what a night it was. The Joes & Petes rocked Toronto on October 4th. The Grand Ballroom at Markham Convention Centre was packed to capacity as JPAA Canada ushered in the 275+ guests into the ballroom. A live band – ZEROX and DJ – GROOVE from Washington DC (a.k.a. Shawn Corera, an Old Peterite) provided music. What really captured the imagination was the presence of many old boys from both schools living in Canada and USA. There were guests all the way from Sydney, Australia; California, Washington DC and Ottawa, Ontario.

It was one happy family when "Two True Brothers of One Family" met to celebrate their 30 years in Canada as a joint entity. The only joint organization for the Joes & Petes in the world and also the first Alumni Association to be formed in Canada among the Sri Lanka Schools. Quite unique and still very strong and united. Despite the challenges of the times, JPAA Canada has stood firm and carried on regardless.

A feat30th anniversaryure of the evening was a leadership initiative of JPAA Canada President Upali Obeyesekere who launched the JPAA Hall of Fame Awards and Awards of Excellence for the first time in its 30 years. Those inducted into the JPAA Hall of Fame are Hazmee Hameed (SPC Rugby & Athletics), Ranjit Wijeyesekere (SPC Athletics), Jeyer Rodrigues (SPC Rugby), Rajive Benedict (SJC Cricket) and Crofton Joseph (SPC Athletics/Rugby/Cricket/Hockey/Basketball).

The Award of Excellency was presented to Roshan Navaratnam & Srinath Wijeyeratne for launching the "Saints Quadrangular" T20 Cricket Tournament in Canada in 2009. Other winners were Christy Joseph (JPAA President 2010/2011/2012) and Benito de Silva (Old Josephian who helped form JPAA in 1984 along with Old Peterite Upali Obeyesekere).

Kudos to Chair, Dance Committee Jerome Fernandez and his team comprising of Roshan Navaratnam, Rehan Goonetilleke, Ranier De Lambert, Rod Diaz, Jeevan Pragasam and Upali Obeyesekere for pulling off a splendid dance with a high rating from the 275+ guests who had a great time.

MC for the evening was Rehan Goonetilleke, an Old Peterite.

Consul General for Sri Lanka in Toronto, Mr. Mohan De Alwis and Mrs. Roma De Alwis were present at the dance. Mr. De Alwis is alumnus of St. Joseph's College.

Calling all Old Joes & Old Peterites in Canada & USA

Posted on 15 September 2014 by admin

Join the Saints as they go marching in!

This is the appeal made to the alumni of St. Joseph's College and St. Peter's College who are now domiciled in Canada and USA. The only joint alumni association for the Joes and Peterites is based in Toronto and had its humble beginnings in 1984. Thirty long years have gone by – but the association still stands firm held by the strength, commitment and loyalty of Old Boys who attended the two schools.

JPAA Canada President Upali Obeyesekere has this message to all Old Boys of the two schools:

"We warmly invite you to join the Saints as we go Marching In on Saturday, October 4th to celebrate our 30th anniversary year. With the music of ZEROX and dynamic DJ – GROOVE all the way from USA – the Joes and Peterites will make this celebration, a memorable occasion. So, please join us to celebrate this momentous event. We started this association in 1984 with all sincerity with one objective in mind – to foster the bonds of fellowship and camaraderie amongst us. To this end, we have done just that and has acted as a catalyst in creating new friendships built on fundamental values we learn in the hallways and corridors of our Alma Mater. Shed aside any misconceptions you may have about the association or the people who run it. We are only trying very hard to keep the association alive so that we can continue our good work and help our Alma Mater in our own small way.

Warmest regards and on behalf of Dance Committee Chair Jerome Fernandez and our team we wish you well."

For tickets call Jerome – 416-616-7283 or Upali 416-445-5390.

Sujith Silva comments on “Saints Quadrangular” vis-a-vis four premier Catholic Schools

Posted on 22 August 2014 by admin

Dear Peterites, Benedictines, Josephians and Ant 47th_Saints_Quadrangularonians,

It’s time for Saints to gather once again and celebrate the camaraderie and fellowship whilst reliving the glory years as four premier Catholic Schools in Sri Lanka strengthen their roots which began in mid 1800’s then Ceylon under colonial governance. During those British rules, 19th Century, importance was placed on developing proper English education and uplifting of Moral and Spiritual values of Ceylonese. English, French, Italian and Irish missionaries, (Catholic and Christian) who travelled around the world in spreading God’s message landed on the Island paradise from Galle (presumably) and found their way and set up their bases in Colombo and Kandy.

With their intervention St. Anthony’s College Katugastota, St. Benedict’s College Colombo 13 (Kotahena to be precise), St. Joseph’s College Colombo 10 (Maradana) and St. Peter’s College Colombo 04 (Bambalapitiya) came into existence and now can boast as Four Premier Catholic (boys) Institutions in Sri Lanka. The Catholic bonding, the education and sports, mainly Cricket has bonded these four schools over a century. Thus forming the union of Quadrangular Schools in Sri Lanka. Undoubtedly these Quadrangular schools had their say in shaping the most popular sport in Sri Lanka, Cricket. Not only Cricket but in all spheres of life here and overseas be it Sports, Arts, Education, Religion, Civil services, Social services, Politics or Corporate World the old boys from these four schools have contributed immensely and outshone others. It’s noteworthy to revisit the old roots as we set to celebrate the 47th Saints Quadrangular.

In years of existence, St. Anthony’s College Katugastota takes the lead over the rest. Founded back in 1854 when Fr. Felice Zoppi, a Franciscan from the Chinese missionary who was sent to Kandy by Monsignor Joseph Maria Bravi OSB, turned his official residence (premises where the present St. Anthony’s Cathedral is based) into a school. Later school was shifted thanks to the initiative of Bishop Bede Beeckmeyer, an Old Anthonian, when he purchased the old Dunuwille Walauwa and shifted the school in 1928 to the present premises of the College in Katugastota. Meanwhile in December 1911, Old Anthonians got together and formed the Old Boys Association, which has been a major force in college development over the last century.

Anthonians commenced Cricket back in 1903 when they formed 'St. Anthony's College Cricket Club' consisting of staff and school boys and played their first Cricket match against Darmaraja College in 1904. The 1st XI Cricket team consisting School Boys was formed in 1906 and played their very first Cricket match against St. Benedict’s College in the same year. There had been many Anthonian ‘Eagles’ who have flown high on the Cricketing fields over a century. This includes names such as Jack Anderson, Lionel V. Jayaweera, Hary Jayasundara, A.C.M.Lafir, Saliya Doranegama, Tom Deen, Cuthbert Pereira, Wejepala Premaratne, Chralie Joseph, Ranjith Samarasekera, Randy Sims, Mahesh Goonatilleka, Merril Dunuwila, Bernard Perera, Marlon Von Hagt, Damina Nadaraja, Ruwan Kalpage, Piyal Wijetunga, Muttaih Muralitharan, Sajith Fernando, Dilshan Witharana, Prasad Ranawaka and Hiran Wickramasekera. ‘Muttaih’ is a Legend who carved a name for him, his alma mater and the country in International Cricket doubt any Eagle or human can surpass him.
From Kandy to Colombo back to the 19th Century, with the enthusiasm for English education among the Catholics and with the creation of the Colombo Vicariate in 1837 Sir Robert Wilmot Horton helped the Vicar Apostolic of Ceylon with a donation of £50 for the first catholic English School in the Island. On May 15, 1839, the Roman Catholic Seminary (the school that was destined to become St. Benedict’s College) was declared open in Wolfendhal Street by its Patron, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Vincente de Rosario, Bishop of Tamocene and Vicar Apostolic of Colombo. “The Seminary” as the school was called in those days, was for superior English Education. As there was a need for a bigger space with rising demand, on 13th of February 1863, the corner stone of St. Benedict’s College (present place) was laid by his lordship the Rt. Rev. Charles Hyacintus Valerga of St. Elias. In the year 1865 St. Benedict's College, was inaugurated by the Benedictine Monks and later in 1868 the De La Salle Brothers took over the administration of the College. Almost after 40 years, in 1904, St. Benedict’s College Old Boy’s Union was formed under the Director of St. Benedict’s College.

Benedictines took to Cricket in 1890’s and played their first ever Cricket match against Wesley College. By then Royal College (commenced Cricket in 1838), St. Thomas’ College (1879), Wesley College (1893) and Trinity College (1893) held sway in School’s Cricket. Later Prince of Wales College (1897) and St. Joseph’s College (1898) joined the fray. Bens played their first match against Joes in 1898 and against Anthonians in 1906.

St. Benedict’s boasts a rich legacy in Cricket apart from their powers in Hockey, Basketball and Football. Some of the outstanding players from their Cricket annals includes Norman Koelemyer, W.E.Perera, Dionysius and Peter Pulle, Laddie Bakleman, Arnold Amerasekera, Joe Savirumuththu, Donald Dias, Aloy Perera, Shelton Perera, Terrence Perera, Edward Perera, Anton Sethupathy, T. Abetdeera, Cecil Waidyaratne, Neville Casie Chetty, Leslie Saverimuthu, Noel Ponniah, L.P.Rayen, Lionel Fernando, Fitzroy Ponniah, Elmo Rodrigopulle, Alan Gunasekera, Lasantha Fernando, Neville Wickramasinghe, Benjamin Silva, Ranjith Fernando, Sunil Fernando, Felix Dias, Harold Sirisena, Selva Perumal, Joe Saverymuththupulle, Lal Wickramatunga, Wasantha Meegoda, Gihan Perera, George Ranasinghe, Nevin Noyahr, Ravi Irugalbandara, Marlon Fernandopulle, Tyrone Kalyanaratne, Attque Mohamed, Robin Perera, Shanthilal Silva, Sujeewa Paranavithane, Susantha De Alwis, Kamalgoda bothers Jagath and Lanka, Suraj Joseph, Christpher Pieris, Russel Hewage, Muditha Pieris, Nirosh Weerasinghe, Chandimal Manjula, Sujeewa De Silva, Vishan Fernando, S.K Perera, Shihara Muthuporuthota, Pradeep Hewage, Rally Tissera, Jeremy Saverimuththupulle, Jason Perera and Dilanka Auwardt. Though many could’ve fit into any Ceylon or Sri Lanka teams (provided they got the opportunity) from this list, only one made it all the way. Ranjit Fernando (Captain 1962 who also Captained Bens Rugby in their first year in 1963) won the Schoolboy Cricket of the Year in 1964 and went on to represent Sri Lanka in its inaugural ICC Cricket World Cup in 1975. With that he commenced his long and illustrious career with Sri Lanka Cricket.

From Kotahena to Maradana; St. Joseph’s College was declared open in 1896 by French missionaries, with Rev Christopher Ernst Bonjean playing a leading role and with Very Rev. Fr. Charles Collin as the First Rector. Josephians commenced Cricket back in 1898 and an ‘un-official’ one-day game was believed to have been played in 1899 against St. Anthony’s which has often remained unaccounted for. However Joes played their first inter-school cricket match against Royal in 1898.

Some of the outstanding Joes Cricketers of which some went on to represent All-Ceylon and Sri Lanka in cricket while some missed out on Test Caps (after 1982) includes names such as Douglas Muller, Fred Perera, Cecil Horan, George Pereira, D. S. Jayasundera, Rajive Benedict, T. H. Kelaart, Malcolm Spittel, Lou Spittel, Gerry Gooneratne, Hector Perera, Fairlie Dalpadatu, Makin Salih, Norton Fredrick, Malcolm Franke, Brian Obeysekera, Brian Perumal, Carlton Bernadus, Rohan Wijesinghe (Jnr), Gary Melder, Dushan Soza, Hareen Silva, Ashley de Silva, Rohan Weerakkody, Ajith Weerakkody, Ajith Alirajah, Prasan Liyanage, Oril De Mel, Viran Perera, Chaminda Vaas, Peter Hamer, Ian Daniels, Trevin Mathews, Asela Pathirana, Michael Vandort, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne. From this, Chaminda Vaas undoubtedly the best in the modern era as a medium fast bowler with present Sri Lanka Captain Angelo Mathews who has been labeled alongside Don Bradman (as a Captain) is set to break many records and bring glory to his alma mater and country.
From Maradana to Bambalapitiya; on 18 January 1922, Fr. Le Goc with a large number of Josephian students and Staff opened St. Joseph’s College South in a Cinnamon plot they acquired earlier in Bambalapitiya which later in 1927 became St. Peter’s College with Rev. Fr. D. J. Nicholas Perera being appointed Rector of the College. Same year , the inaugural meeting of St. Peter's College Old Boys' Union took place on 15th October 1927, presided over by the first Rector, very. Rev. Fr. D.J. Nicholas Perera who also became the President of the Union. St. Peter’s took to Cricket in early 1930’s and played their first Battle of Saints against St. Joseph’s College in 1933.

St. Peter’s too boast of a rich Cricketing pedigree apart from Rugger, Basketball and athletics. Some of those outstanding names which comes to mind includes Percy Perera, Joe Misso, Dion Wallace, Russell Duckworth, H.I.K Fernando, Travis Fernando, Clive Inman, David Heyn, Roya Dias, Kitto Fernandopulle, Tony Opatha, Keerthi Gunaratne, Benard Wijetunga (Jnr), Michael Elias, Vonodhan John, Rumesh Ratnayake, Senarath Seneviratne, Amal Silva, Rohan Bultjens, Rohan Paulpillai, Ranmore Martinesz, Roshan Anthony, Indunil Anthony, Jayaweera Bandara, Niranjan Dabare, Riaz Farook, Asanga Perera, Hemal Wimalasekera, Russell Arnold, Mario Villevarayan, Malinda Warnapura, Kaushal Lokuarachchi and Angelo Perera. Roy Dias could be termed as one of the finest batsman Sri Lanka seen who also became the Vice Captain of Sri Lanka Test team and Russell Arnold who also played both Test and One day Cricket now is in the limelight as one of the best international cricket commentators.

Come tomorrow at St. Peter’s College Grounds, we celebrate the camaraderie of the Old Boys of these schools as they come together to celebrate the 47th Saints Quadrangular. This will be held on 23rd and 24th of August in Colombo (at St. Peter’s College Grounds, St. Joseph’s College Grounds and at St. Thomas’ College Grounds). This year, Old Peterites Sports Club will host this prestigious Old Boy’s sporting event. It is the flagship event of the Old Boys of the four premier Catholic Schools in Sri Lanka.

The Annual Saints quadrangular tournament was the brainchild of the Old Benedictines for their OBU Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1963. Various schools were invited for this inaugural tournament, but coincidently only three schools responded namely St. Anthony’s College, Kandy, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and St. Peter’s College, Colombo. Old Anthonian Ranjith Samarasekera is a pillar of strength of the Saints Quadrangular as he galvanized the OBU’s subsequent to the inaugural event and made this an annual event. He has been present in every organizing committee since then.

In addition to Cricket and Basketball Tournaments, this year organizer’s will be introducing a 7 a side Rugby tournament for the first time and this will make the Saints Quadrangular more exciting with most of the current leading National and Club Rugby players who are hailing from these four schools are expected to represent their alma mater.

The winning Basketball team of the Quadrangular Tournament will receive the Very Rev. Fr. Joe E. Wickremasinghe Trophy. Last year the tournament was held in Kandy where Old Peterites won the Basketball and Main Cricket Tournaments whilst Old Anthonians won the Over 40’s (age) Cricket tournament. This year, ‘Ranjith Samarasekera Challenge Trophy’ donated by Old Peterites Sports Club is to be introduced for the Rugby 7’s in recognizing the commitment and the excellent service rendered by Old Anthonian Ranjith Samarasekera towards Saints Quadrangular.

The Chief Guest for this occasion will be former Peterite and Sri Lanka Cricketer and now an International Cricket commentator Mr. Russel Arnold whilst Guest of Honor will be former Josephian Cricketer (1969) Mr. Arthur Hakel. A Saints Quadrangular Social will be held on Saturday 23rd August from 7.00p.m onwards at St. Peter’s College Hall with Live Band, entertainment and with food stalls.
Tickets are available with respective OBU’s.

Let the battle begins with Quadrangular Comrade lives forever!

Do share this with Saints.

Go Saints!

REPORT: “Big Match Cricket Carnival” at King City on July 1 – Canada Day

Posted on 15 July 2014 by admin

 IMG_8450 Canada Day

July 1 is Canada’s birthday. The occasion marks the joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date but the British parliament and Cabinet kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982, when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution.

In the midst of this historic day, the Sri Lankan community in Toronto stages its “Big Batch” extravaganza that attracts hundreds of cricket fans who enjoy a day’s cricket, food and revelry. This year was no exception and former Sri Lanka cricketer David Heyn was Chief Guest at the 30th Josephian-Peterite cricket encounter that was played at the picturesque King City Grounds on July 1 – Canada Day. The “Battle of the Saints” was given pride of place on centre ground due to its milestone 30th encounter. This game took place alongside the 26th Royal/Thomian “Battle of the Blues” encounter and 9th Trinity/Antonian “Battle of the Hills”. The colourful tents of the six schools mixed with the tents of the food vendors made the venue look impressive to the hundreds of spectators who thronged the imposing King City Grounds on Canada’s National Day.

The “Big Match Cricket Carnival” is the end result of the splendid work of the joint committee of six schools who worked through in a cohesive manner to organize this spectacular event with precision. The joint committee worked out the logistics of the common elements with care and ensured that all three venues were assigned in a manner that was agreed by all and special note must be made of the camaraderie that prevailed throughout the process from planning to execution. A special thanks to Old Thomian Rukshan Mendis who coordinated the joint committee comprising of Yoga Atheray (President, Royal College OBA – ROCOBA); Ananda Wickramasinghe (President, Trinity College OBA), Joy Perera (President, St. Anthony’s College Kandy OBA), Rajith Kannangara (President, S. Thomas’ College OBA) and Upali Obeyesekere (President, Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association). Old Josephian cricket legend Rajive Benedict was in charge of securing the Maple Leaf Cricket Grounds at King City that proved to be a fitting venue for the three “Big Match” sporting event.

GROUND 3 – TRINITY/ANTONIAN 9th ENCOUNTER “BATTLE OF THE HILLS”
The strong Antonian team met the daring Trinitians in their 9th encounter of the Canadian series. Joy Perera and Ananda Wickramasinghe, the two presidents of St. Anthony’s College OBA and Trinity College OBA respectively ensured that the best team was put forward by the two schools. N the main game, the Antonians captained by Paval Thurairajah beat the Trinitians by 142 runs to retain Rev. Fr. Aiden de Silva OSB trophy for the SEVENTH consecutive year. In the Masters game, Antonian skipper Jeysekar Jayaraman led his team to a thrilling 1-run win to keep the Masters Trophy for the third year in succession.

Main Game: St.Anthony’s College OBA – 222 for 5 wicket in 30 overs beat Trinity College OBA by 142 runs. Two Antonian players came in from USA for the game – Jeyasekar Jeyaraman (JJ) and Paul Nadarajah.

For the Antonians, former star batsman Damian Nadarajah top scored with 73 runs. It may be recalled that after leaving school, Nadarajah went on to captain Tamil Union in 1996/1997 in the Sara Trophy. Displaying his old batting form Nadarajah led the onslaught with skipper Paval Thurairajah 61 retired, Paul Kiruba Nadarajah 20, and Titus Paulraj 35 making useful contributions. Sudharshan, better known in rugby circles bowled best for Trinity with 2 for 58.  Trinity were bundled out for 80 runs with Malinga Wijesuriya bowling brilliantly with 5 for 10 and Chamil Rajapakse bagging 2 wickets for 7 runs.

The Masters Game between Trinity and St. Anthony’s ended in a thrilling 1-run win for the Antonians. Batting first the Antonians scored 114 runs for 6 wickets in the mandatory 20 overs with Kuga Pitchamuttu scoring a fiery 38 runs and Trevor Brown unbeaten with 19. Ananda Wickramasinghe (Trinity Lion in Athletics) bowled best for Trinity with 3 for 6. Trinity batting second fought valiantly but could score only 113 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs falling short by 1-run to give the Antonians a double win in the 9th encounter. Roy, 33, and Ravi Ponnambalam, 12, were among the runs for Trinity. For the Antonians, Joy Perera bowled best with 3 for 25, and TK Pillai had 2 for 13.

GROUND 1 – ROYAL/THOMIAN 26th ENCOUNTER “BATTLE OF THE BLUES”

The Royal/Thomian has reached its 26th year in the Canadian series. The cricketing fraternity salutes Rohan Jayasekara, former Royal cricketer who is the only double-international we have in the community. He played for Sri Lanka and then for Canada. For his contribution towards Canadian cricket, Jayasekara was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Cricket Fame earlier in the year by the Canada Cricket Association.

The Masters (“Stallions”) game precedes the Main game. The day began with the Royal-Thomian Stallions game with the Royal Stallions upon winning the toss elected to field. Sean De Saram and Gerhard Munaweera batted well for S. Thomas. The Royal Stallions started off their innings slowly but steadied the innings thereafter to claim a WIN.

The main game of 40 overs for the coveted Mustangs Trophy began next. The Thomians were led by Lakshan Liyanage and the Royalists were led by Eddie Jayawardene.

Thomians batting first were soon in trouble at 41 for the loss of 4 wickets but later recovered mainly through Shantha Jayasekara’s knock. At one point it looked as if STC would recover well to post a formidable score, however, after Jayasekara was run out for 85, Thomians consolidated to reach 211 in 38 overs. Rukshan Mendis, 41, helped boost the Thomian score. The last wicket pair of Trevor Fernando and Jehan Ahmad frustrated the Royalists. Eventually Jehan was caught and bowled by Dushy Mahesh in the 38th over. Left-arm pace bowler Asantha Fonseka captured 4 wickets for the Royalists.

Royalists chasing over 5 runs per over lost wickets at regular intervals. Thomian pace and spin combination kept Royal in check. With 108 for 8 in the 25th over, many expected Royalists to fold up quickly. However, they fought superbly through their 9th wicket pair of Rohan Jayasekara and Charitha to bring them closer to the target. Jayasekara got out in the 36th over and Royal fell short by 14 runs. Ayesh Seneviratne bowled superbly to take 3 important scalps for the Thomians.

STC – 211 all out in 38 overs

Shantha Jayasekara 85, Rukshan Mendis 41. Bowling: Asantha Fonseka 4 for 24

CENTRE GROUND – JOSEPHIAN/PETRITE 30th ENCOUNTER “BATTLE OF THE SAINTS”

The Josephian-Peterite encounter prides itself of been the first Sri Lankan “Big Match” to be played in Canada in 1984. Having reached a milestone of 30 years the Josephian-Peterite Joint Alumni Association invited Dr. Adiel Anghie and David Heyn, two Peterite stars of yesteryear to be Guests of Honour. Adiel Anghie, captained the Peterite cricket team in 1961 and also had the privilege of captaining the college rugby team in 1959. David Heyn captained St. Peter’s College in 1964, and then played for Sri Lanka (Ceylon) from 1966 to 1976. Dr. Anghie lives in the U.S. while Heyn lives in London, England. The presence of these two fine sportsmen of yesteryear gave the 30th anniversary game an added dimension and it was good to see David Heyn and Dr. Adiel Anghie mingling with old friends amongst the Royal, Thomian, Trinity, Antonian camps.-

SCORES: Peterites won the Masters game by 23 runs. SPC – 131 for 8 wickets and SJC – 108 for 6 wickets.

The Masters game was marred by showers but the weather settled down allowing a 15-over game. Josephians led by Milan Gunawardana fielded a strong side with Ian Joseph, Rohan Vanigasooriyar, Dayan Tranchell, Melvyn Machado, Mario Steinwall, Jeevan Pragasam, Brian Baldsing, Duminda Perera in the side. The Peterites were led by Rehan Goonetilleke with Srinath Wijeyeratne, Michael Jayatilleke, Sean Corera, Yohan Wijeyewickrema, Chanaka de Mel, Niloo Wijegunawardena, Terrence Rajah turning out for the school by the canal. On paper the Josephians had a better side but skipper Goonetilleke led his team to an admirable win. Batting first the Peterites knocked up 131 runs for the loss of 8 wickets – quite an imposing score for 15 overs. Opener Chanaka de Mel, 31, Yohan Wijeyawickrema, 32, Sean Corera, 31, were in the runs for the Peterites. Dayan Tranchell, 2 for 20, and Rohan Vanigasooriyar, 2 for 26 were the pick of the Josephian bowlers. In reply, the Josephians fell short of the target and were 108 for 6 wickets at close. An unbeaten knock of 36 by Duminda Perera and Mario Steinwall, 29, top scored for the Joes while Srinath Wijeyeratne, 2 for 29 and Shawn Corera, 2 for 25 were the pick of the bowlers.

MAIN GAME – Josephians won the main game by 125 runs. SJC – 284 for 5 wickets; SPC – 159 All Out.

The Main Game included top players who represent Canada and play league cricket in Toronto. Canadian opener Ruvindu Gunasekara and Srimantha Wijeyeratne for the Peterites and Trevin Bastiampillai, Nigel Isaacs, and P. Ravishankar for the Josephians. Others of note are Dhanuka Pathirana, Ray Lord, Rajive Benedict all Joes who are well known in the cricket circles both in Sri Lanka and Canada.  Batting first the Josephians amassed 284 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Trevin Bastiampillai, 57, Gavin Bastiampillai, 95, and Dhanuka Pathirana, 78 helped boost the Josephian score and provided entertaining cricket to the hundreds of spectators who had come to watch the 30th encounter. Ruvindu Gunasekara, 2 for 56 bowled best for the Peterites.

Facing an uphill battle the Peterites turned to Canadian opener Ruvindu Gunasekara who was unfortunately run out at 16. They lost wickets at regular intervals and eventually posted 159 runs all out. Only skipper Srimantha Wijeyeratne, 60, stood up to the strong Josephian bowling but after he was ruled LBW for a well earned half-century. The Josephians pretty well had the match in the bag with Gunasekara and Wijeyeratne back in the pavilion. Trevin Bastiampillai turned in a good all-round performance by taking 3 wickets for 32 runs. A very high standard of cricket was witnessed and Chief Guest David Heyn commented on this aspect of the game relative to the Joe-Pete game played in England.

Joes win Main Game while Peterites take Masters – 30th “Battle of the Saints” Annual Encounter in Canada

Posted on 09 July 2014 by admin

JOES2014The Josephian-Peterite game in Canada reached a milestone this year. It is 30 years since the launch of this game that has evoked much interest over the years and this year was no exception. 1964 Peterite Captain David Heyn and 1961 Captain Adiel Anghie were invited to be Guests of Honour at the game. David flew in from London, England while Adiel drove across the border from the U.S. The game is presented by the joint Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada (JPAA Canada) that was formed in 1984, and the first Sri Lankan School Alumni Association to be formed in Canada. The Joe-Pete is part of a major Cricket Carnival that includes the Royal/Thomian and Trinity Antonian. The services of two popular food vendors were secured for the event while DJ-Bede Beekmeyer provided appropriate music throughout the day. The honour of captaning the Main Game fell on Rod Diaz (SPC) and Arvind Kandappah (SJC) while Rehan Goonetilleke (SPC) and Milan Gunawardena (SJC) captained the Nasters game.

July 1 is Canada's National Day and celebrations are held throughout the country. With this backdrop, the "Big Match" cricket festival is held on July 1 which obviously is a statutory holiday. The joint committee of six schools (S. Thomas' College OBA, Royal College OBA, Trinity College Kandy OBA, St. Anthony's College Kandy OBA and Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada) plans and execute the tournament with meticulous precision. This year, young Rukshan Mendis of S. Thomas' College OBA headed the joint committee with Yoga Atheray (President, ROCOBA), Joy Perera (SACK OBA), Ananda Wickramasinghe (TCK OBA) and Upali Obeyesekere (President, JPAA Canada) contributing to the overall organization of this major event.

Detail scores will be posted shortly.
