Sri Lanka “Big Match” Cricket Festival called off due to heavy rains

Posted on 01 July 2015 by admin

01 July 2015, Toronto.

Due to heavy rains that caused the Maple Leaf Grounds to get waterlogged, the Sri Lanka "Big Match" Cricket Festival will not take place as scheduled on July 1, at 10 AM. The joint organizing committee had an emergency teleconference at 9:00 am and decided unequivocally to postpone the festival to a later date. There were three "big Matches" that were to be played on July 1 at King City. The Josephian-Peterite; Royal-Thomian and Trinity-Antonian.

An interesting thing happened as a result of the eleventh hour cancellation. At the joint teleconference hed at 9:00 am this morning, the chief vendor Mark Swaminathan of Hot Breads Bakers said his main concern was for 200 packets of Lamprais that were already prepared. After negotiations with the vendor, it was agreed to price the Lamprais at $8 per packet. A flyer was prepared and sent out at around 10 AM to the Sri Lankan community advertising the sale of 200 Lamprais packets at $8 per packet.  By 1:00 pm there were many takers and the entire stock of Lamprais was sold out averting a possible financial disaster. All is well that ends well!

Nostalgic reunion of Josephian-Peterite fraternity at JPAA Canada “Fellowship Nite”

Posted on 27 June 2015 by admin

Fellowship Nite 2015 FlyerJPAA Canada presented its "Fellowship Nite" at J & J Swagat Convention Centre in Toronto last Friday (June 26) that attracted a large cross-section of Josephians, Peterites and well wishers from the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Toronto. Guest of Honour was Tyrone Le Mercier, Peterite Cricket Captain of 1963 and his wife Jean who flew in from Melbourne, Australia for the event. Music was provided by DJ-ROHAN and a sumptuous dinner was prepared courtesy of J&J management. The newly refurbished Convention Centre was all lit up and the capacity crowd simply had a great time. As one guest remarked, "We had a terrific time – good company, excellent music, super dinner and reasonably priced premium liquor. What more could we ask for $25?"

Tyrone Le Mercier was Guest of Honour and was accompanied by his wife Jean. Tyrone played 5 years for St. Peter's College captaining in 1963. He then played club cricket for SSC and for his employer Mackwoods Limited who won the Mercantile Championships at the time. Tyrone is best remembered for his devastating doube-century (235 n.o.) against St. Anthony's College at Katugastota.

JPAA President Upali Obeyesekere personally invited Tyrone Le Mercier to grace the occasion. A nostalgic moment when Antonian Trevor Brown was called to the podium to reflect on his impressions of Tryone Le Mercier's 235 not out against St. Anthony's College Kandy in 1962. Trevor and his two sisters Druscilla and Sabrina had witnessed the match as their father Cyril Brown, was on the staff of St. Anthony's College. Trevor recalled Le Mercier's innings and said the Antonians were concerned he would pass the immortal Jack Anderson's score of 291 runs against S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia in 1918.

The Fellowship Nite organized by JPAA Canada (Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada) is a big draw every year with well known past cricketers flying into Toronto from all over the world. Last year Ceylon Cap David Heyn and legendary sports star Dr. Adiel Anghie (since departed) graced the occasion as Guests of Honour. David has made London, England his home while Dr. Adiel Anghie lived in West Virginia, USA. The event attracted past students from St. Joseph's College, St. Peter's College, Trinity College, St. Anthony's College Kandy, Royal College and S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia. A live band was in attendance and all had a good time.

The joint Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada (JPAA Canada) was founded in 1984, as an Ad-Hoc Committee and continued to function in this capacity until 1992. ~~ It was the first Sri Lankan Schools' Alumni Association to be formed in Canada and remains the only joint Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association in the world. This is quite a unique feature in the 31 year-old association that caters to both Josephians and Peterites under one banner in Canada.

In 1993, the Ad-Hoc Committee was structured as a Non-Profit Corporation and governed under a set of Bylaws and Constitution. There have been 18 leaders of this joint organization who have led with purpose and passion to uphold the values of Sri Lanka's two leading Roman Catholic School – St. Joseph's College & St.Peter's College.

The original Ad-Hoc Committee (1984-1992) comprised of Upali Obeyesekere (Facilitator), Benito de Silva, Roy Alles (deceased), Sunimal Perera, Nihal Perera, Jimmy Raymond, Anton Perera, Hamzee Hameed, Laky Ranchigoda, and Lyall Bakelmun.

JPAA Canada AGM: Membership drive is central focus of 31 year-old alumni association

Posted on 28 March 2015 by admin

JPAA AGM 01The Annual General Meeting of the Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada took place in the Hamilton Room, Radisson Hotel Toronto East on Friday, March 27, 2015. Prayers were led by Old Peterite Rehan Goonetilleke and the meeting concluded with one central focus – "increase membership". The joint Joe-Pete association, the only one of its kind in the world was formed in 1984 at a time when the alumni were young and new immigrants to Canada. Over the years, interest in participation has dwindled due to increase challenges of time management and family commitments. The longer people live outside their motherland (in this case Sri Lanka), the desire to participate in the alumni activities lessen. Age too has taken a toll in membership and it is vitally important to engage the younger "Old Boys" in the JPAA Canada and this concern came out loud and clear.

President Upali Obeyesekere set his team a target of 100+ members for 2015. This is only a token considering there are more than a thousand Sri Lankans who attended either St. Joseph's College and/or St. Peter's College in Colombo and now domiciled in Canada. JPAA Canada is recognized as the first Sri Lankan alumni association to be formed until the Royal/Trinity/Thomian group formed another joint association. Within a few years, this alliance broke up and formed individual organizations. JPAA Canada however continued as a joint entity.

Calendar of events for 2015 were announced by the president so that the Peterites and Josephians living in Toronto could mark the dates on their calendar.

  • Friday, June 27th – Fellowship Nite at J&J Swagat Banquet Hall
  • July 1 (Canada) Day – 31st Josephian-Peterite Cricket Encounter at King City Grounds (Main Game + Masters Game
  • Sunday, August 16  – 6th Saints Quadrangular Cricket Tournament at Ajax Cricket Grounds
  • Saturday, October 3 – Annual Dinner Dance (Venue to be finalised)

All Josephians and Peterites in Canada are requested to support the association and participate in the above events.

2014 was a landmark year for the joint Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada. We celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2014 and staged a very successful Fellowship Nite at which two legendary Peterite sports icons – David Heyn and Dr. Adiel Anghie were the Guests of Honour. The 30th "Battle of the Saints" was also a success when we joined the Royalists & Thomians and Trinitians and Antonians in a joint Cricket Extravaganza at the famed King Citgy grounds. The Annual Dinner Dance was also a success and so was the Saints Quadrangular Cricket Tournament.
