JPAA Canada AGM: Membership drive is central focus of 31 year-old alumni association

Posted on 28 March 2015 by admin

JPAA AGM 01The Annual General Meeting of the Josephian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada took place in the Hamilton Room, Radisson Hotel Toronto East on Friday, March 27, 2015. Prayers were led by Old Peterite Rehan Goonetilleke and the meeting concluded with one central focus – "increase membership". The joint Joe-Pete association, the only one of its kind in the world was formed in 1984 at a time when the alumni were young and new immigrants to Canada. Over the years, interest in participation has dwindled due to increase challenges of time management and family commitments. The longer people live outside their motherland (in this case Sri Lanka), the desire to participate in the alumni activities lessen. Age too has taken a toll in membership and it is vitally important to engage the younger "Old Boys" in the JPAA Canada and this concern came out loud and clear.

President Upali Obeyesekere set his team a target of 100+ members for 2015. This is only a token considering there are more than a thousand Sri Lankans who attended either St. Joseph's College and/or St. Peter's College in Colombo and now domiciled in Canada. JPAA Canada is recognized as the first Sri Lankan alumni association to be formed until the Royal/Trinity/Thomian group formed another joint association. Within a few years, this alliance broke up and formed individual organizations. JPAA Canada however continued as a joint entity.

Calendar of events for 2015 were announced by the president so that the Peterites and Josephians living in Toronto could mark the dates on their calendar.

  • Friday, June 27th – Fellowship Nite at J&J Swagat Banquet Hall
  • July 1 (Canada) Day – 31st Josephian-Peterite Cricket Encounter at King City Grounds (Main Game + Masters Game
  • Sunday, August 16  – 6th Saints Quadrangular Cricket Tournament at Ajax Cricket Grounds
  • Saturday, October 3 – Annual Dinner Dance (Venue to be finalised)

All Josephians and Peterites in Canada are requested to support the association and participate in the above events.

ObituariesWILHELM HOFFMAN passed away peacefully on March 23, 2015, at Dandenong Hospital in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Funeral details are shown below. May his soul Rest in Peace! He was 79 years old.

A proud alumnus of St. Peter's College – Wilhelm Hoffman lived at the Bambalapitiya Flats (F Block) with his parents and siblings in the 50s and 60s prior to immigrating to Australia. On leaving school, Wilhelm was employed at Rowlands and played cricket for his employer. Wilhelm used his height to advantage and was an effective spinner in his days. He had his baptism to cricket in 1951 in a strong Peterite side led by H.I.K. Fernando, legendary wicket-keeper batsman who was a fixture in the national side. Wilhelm played for his alma mater from 1951 – 1954 (both years inclusive). St. Peter's College was captained in 1952 by H.I.K. Fernando (captained twice), Herbert Wittachy – 1953, Clive Inman (1954). Archives show that Wilhelm Hoffman's team mates for the four years include the celebrated All-Ceylon and Liecestershire cricketer Clive Inman, H.I.K. Fernando, Brian de Silva, Jayantha Fernando, Pat Muthumani, Tudor Wijesinghe, Herbert Wittachy, Ken Duckworth, Maurice Salgado, Lakshman Serasinghe, Mark Pereira, Denzil Abeysekara, P.A.T. Kelly, Leonard Wettasinghe, Tony Don Michael.

Wilhelm earned his place in the Peterite team for his spin bowling and batted lower order in 1951 and eventually moved up over the years to go in at No.3 in 1954. Following him at No.4 was skipper Clive Inman who went on to score the record breaking 204 (Retired Hurt) that year. Out of interest, Josephians in 1954 were led by Chrysantha Fernando and included among others Yasa Ratnayaka, Kirthi Caldera, Ralph Brohier, Mahinda de Silva, Tony Buhar and M. Berenger.

Wilhelm's younger brother Everard Hoffman played for St. Peter's College in Travis Fernando's 1965 team. Sister Larraine Hoffman was a versatile vocalist who was well known in the music scene in the 50s and 60s. The Hoffman family immigrated to Australia in the sixties and have lived 'down under' for around 50 years.

St. Joseph’s College, Darley Road displayed a remarkable performance to beat rivals St. Peter’s and retained Rev. Fr. Basil Weeratunga (OMI) Memorial Shield after a lapse of 15 years.

When it comes to a Joe-Pete encounter, excitement and crowd support had been remarkable and nothing was different when the two teams clashed in their Under-20 Singer Inter-school Rugby Championship match at Longdon Place, Colombo yesterday with St. Joseph’s displaying a remarkable performance to beat School Rugby Sevens champions St. Peter’s 17-10.

The game also marked the 45th Annual Encounter played between the two schools for Rev. Fr. Basil Weeratunga (OMI) memorial shield and the Josephians retained the title after a lapse of 15 years. Josephians last won this title in 1999. St. Peter’s was the better team of the day having had the possession of the ball on most occasions but the Darley Road School came all guns blazing in the second half to turn the table on favourites St. Peter’s.

St. Peter’s scored one goal and one penalty while the winners obtained their points through one goal and two unconverted tries.

The game started with a rush of blood with the players of both teams getting involved in an ugly quarrel but things settled down and St. Peter’s made some attacking moves in the first half to win a 25m penalty in the 27th minute which was successfully booted by their captain Kevin Dixson after Josephians missed the first penalty of the evening.

St. Peter’s broke try deadlock in the evening when speedy Kevin Dixson ran about 30m with the angle receiving a pass from centre player Nishon Perera and sneaked past few defenders to touch down near right flag corner. Impressive Dixson’s boot went in the right direction to add the extra points with scores reading 10-0, 30 minutes into the game.

St. Joseph’s first points of the match came in the second half when one of Peterite back row players made a terrible mistake by knocking-on while collecting a high ball near the touch line and Josephians capitalised the error perfectly to make their rivals pay through a Shehan Bopearachchi try in the 45th minute of the game. Shamilka Kurumbalapitiya, who had a poor outing kicking the ball, failed to add the extra points as the scores read 10-5 at this stage.

The game was evenly poised for an enthralling end with both teams making number of line breaks. Peterites were dealt with a major blow when their play maker Dixson went out of the game due to an injury.

St. Joseph’s came up with another score when big-made Stephan Gregory, with the support of the forwards, crossed try line under the post. Kurumbalapitiya was spot-on with the kick as the Josephians led for the first time of the match with scores reading 12-10.

With the crowd shouting Joseph…, Joseph…, the Darley Road team scored another try with only one minute to go for the final whistle rubbing salt on Peterites’ wounds. Nimesh Priyankara was the ball carrier to cross the try line.

Requiem Mass on Friday, March 20 for Dr. Nielhaan Samaranayake

Posted on 18 March 2015 by admin

Nielhaan SamaranayakeSecretary, St. Peter's College OBU Algi Wijewickrema has informed us that a Requiem Mass will be offered for the repose of the soul of our dear friend and Past President of the OBU, Dr. Nielhaan Samaranayake, on Friday 20th March, at St Mary's Church Bambalapitiya, commencing 7.30 p.m. The OBU request all Old Boys and friends to please attend.

Dr.Nielhaan Samaranayake was a proud alumnus of St. Peter's College and emerged as a brilliant academic and excelled in sports. He was also the Head Prefect. Despite his busy schedule as Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Surgeon Commodore, Sri Lanka Navy, Dr. Nielhaan found time to head the St.Peter's College OBU from 2011-2013.

One of his leadership initiatives was The Peterite Walk in 2012. Here below is an abstract from a news item on the event.

The day began with Holy Mass concelebrated by the Rector, Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel, old Peterite priests and other priests from the College and the Walk proper was officially started off with a special prayer and hoisting of the College flag. The organising committee planned for this Walk with their previous experience but all predictions were proven wrong when with an unprecedented response, Peterites rallied round their alma mater and walked in their thousands. There were boys from year 1 to year 13, old boys from those who had just left school to great grandfathers and there were mothers and sisters of the Peterites too. Teachers, minor staff, the P.T.A. and the Welfare Society all were behind the organisers supporting the event and joining in the Walk. There were even Elephants and horses that were included, not to mention a cycle parade and cartoon characters, Papare bands, stilt walkers, boats on the canal displaying the College flag to add colour, and to cap it all a helicopter was seen flying the college flag to the amusement of all taking part in the walk .
The Walk also saw Old Boys from the quadrangular schools, namely St. Anthony’s, St. Benedict’s & St. Joseph’s  and their sister school, Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya joining the Peterites .
While there were bound to be some irritated motorists on Galle Road that day, others enjoyed the scene, seeing so many frolicking while supporting their school.
The fun did not end with the procession returning to the school. The College ground had been turned into a carnival ground. There was music by “Black” and games of skill, bouncers for children, eats and drinks and ice cream aplenty in addition to other entertainment that had been lined up.
Being citizens who take their civic responsibility seriously, even though this was a fun event, they ensured that garbage was collected and disposed so that the road users are not inconvenienced.
A very happy and beaming Rohan Victoria, Chairman of the Walk committee and an equally elated President of the Old Boys Union, Dr. Nielhaan Samaranayake were seen at the end of the Walk, mingling with those enjoying the fun and thanking those who participated. Peterites must be a proud lot for having conducted such a successful Walk for such a noble cause and one can’t help congratulating them.

41st Saints Limited Over Encounter – St. Peter’s defeat rivals St. Joseph’s

Posted on 14 March 2015 by admin

St. Peter’s defeated traditional rivals St. Joseph’s easily by 59 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in their annual limited over encounter played at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday. The encounter which is the 41st in the series saw the Peterites chalk up their 18th win to regain the Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai Memorial Challenge Trophy.

St. Peter’s taking first lease of the wicket began in an inauspicious start losing an early wicket with just ten runs on the board. They recovered thanks to some useful knocks coming from Saveen Gunasekera and Lakshina Rodrigo. Later skipper Chandula Jayamanne along with Sachin Dalpethado made useful knocks for the Peterites to reach 168 for 7 in the 39th over before bad weather hampered proceedings after which their innings came to an end.

The resumption saw the Josephians being given a revised Duckworth/Lewis target of 159 in 29 overs but they were unable to come to terms of the Peterite bowling trio of Vinu Mohotti, Ashanth Malka and Randel Seneviratne who together combined to bundle them out for just 99runs.

SCORES

St. Peter’s 166 for 7 in 38.4 overs (Saveen Gunasekera 44, Lakshina Rodrigo 20, Sachin Dalpethado 18, Chandula Jayamanne 40 n.o.: Hashindra Perera 2 for 10, Malshan Rodrigo 2 for 21)

St. Joseph’s 99 in 23 overs (Jehan Daniel 30, Pethum Madusanka 15: Vinu Mohotti 2 for 9, Ashanth Malka 2 for 10, Randel Seneviratne 2 for 30).

Algi Wijewickrema reporting from Colombo: 81st Joe-Pete Cricket Encounter

Posted on 07 March 2015 by admin

March 7, 2015. From Algi Wijewickrema reporting from Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Having sent updates from time to time while the match was on yesterday, I don't think there's need for a lengthy summary but here's a short one for the benefit of whoever was not able to receive the updates yesterday.

If the 1st day's honours belonged to St. Peter's then the second day's honours surely belonged to the Joes. In fact I believe that Petes could have won the match had they declared at their overnight score and let the Joes start their 2nd innings with a huge psychological pressure. This is not suggested in hind sight but was suggested to the cricketing powers that be but fell on deaf ears. But I presume that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Be that as it may, the Petes continued to bat on the 2nd day and were bowled out for 268 in 45 minutes for the addition of 53 runs to their overnight score and if there was any saving grace in having continued their batting, Thaneesha Weerakoon the overnight batsman who played the vital support role which allowed Sachin Dalpathado to get a century, got his 50 and was last out on 57. Dalpathado was in fact the first to go when the score was 244, having made 114. The new record for the 8 wicket partnership established was 159 between Sachin Dalpathado (114) and Thaneesha Weerakoon (57).

When the Joes came out to bat the 2nd time, they looked a different side from the 1st innings. Gone were the tentative pushing and prodding by their batsman and gone too was the nervousness at the crease at least among their front line batsmen. The result was that the Joes occupied the crease for 82 overs and made 293 for 8. In the process they had their opening batsman get a valuable 118 and Thaneesha weerakoon bagged 4 wickets in the process to have a memorable match bag of 8 wickets in addition to his invaluable 57 when batting in the Peterite 1st inning.

This left the Peterites 10 overs + the mandatory 15 overs in the last hour to get 193 for victory. An impossible target and one that the Petes never attempted. However the Josephian bowler Hashindra Perera returned figures of 12-2-47-6 as the Petes struggled to a 110 for 7 when stumps were drawn. An entertaining 55 was scored by Dineth Thimodya in the process with several towering sixes that cleared the boundary lines easily. And you could say that the match was an exciting draw with the Joes earning the honours on the 2nd day, though the Petes could say that they had a 1st innings win.

The awards were shared as follows:
Best Fielder – Vinoo Mohotti of St. Peter's
Best Bowler – Hashindra Perera of St. Joseph's
Best Batsman – Sandaruwan Rodrigo of St. Joseph's
Best All Rounder – Thaneesha Weerakoon of St. Peter's
