Peterites retain Fr. Basil Wiratunga Shield with a 16-11 win over Joes

Joe-Pete Rugby 2014St.Peter's retained the Rev.Fr.Basil Wiratunga Shield for the 15th consecutive year when they beat their traditional rivals St.Joseph's by '16 points (two tries and two penalties) to 11 (one try and two penalties) in their Singer Under 20 schools rugger match played at Havelock Park yesterday (June 7). The Joes led 11-5 at the breather.

The Joes opened scoring through an unconverted try scored by Stephen Gregory early in the first half. Dulith Fernando extended the Joes lead by firing over two penalties.

But the Peterites came back fighting when Ramesh Rukmal touched down to score an unconverted try. Both sides could not make much headway due mistakes at crucial moments such as fragile ball handling or knocking on while poised to score.

Peterites who were trailing 5-11 at the short whistle reduced the deficit when Shamri Burah made no mistake with a penalty. The Peterites took the lead when Kevin Dickson touched down . Burah assured a Peterite win by slamming over a penalty the make the final tally 16-11.
