29th Battle of the Saints (Canada Series) in Toronto

Canada Day is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as among Canadians internationally.

With this backdrop, the 29th Josephian-Peterite Masters + Main games were played at the picturesque King City Grounds on July 1, 2013. The Masters' game always precedes the Main game. The Peterites won the Masters while the Josephians rallied to win the Main game. Detail scores shown below.

The Master’s game toss was won by the josephians. Roshan Anthony, skipper of Old Joes and elected to bat. SPC Master’s XI was led by Lakdasa Perera

SPC Master’s XI / 84 for 04 in 15.2 overs – Phil Navaratne 45 Retd. Niloo 12 n.o. Rehan 08 n.o. Bowling: Roshan Anthony 04-00-10-2, R.Thathil 03-01-09-2

S.P.C. MASTER’S WON BY 06 WICKETS.

The Main Game is usually the ‘crunch’ game and the toss was won by Peterite Skipper Clement Fernando and invited Joes to Bat first. Petes had the Joes curtailed until the 27th over to struggle at 98/04 and then a couple of loose overs bowled by the Petes saw the pair Gavin Bastianpillai & Arvind Kandappa putting on 82 runs for the 5th wicket and getting them out of trouble to finish at 169 all out in 40 overs. Arvind a solid 50 & Gavina patient 28 runs. Srimantha was the pick of the bowlers for SPC taking 3 for 27 and young Prasouth claiming 2 for 20 in 8 Ov

Peterites chasing a getable target of 170 to win, lost 05 quick wickets for mere 20 runs and never saw them stabilizing there on with Srimantha, John, Clement, Senthuren, Denver from much were expected. Petes all out for 110 with only Yohan, Marlon, Rod and young P.Vijayarajh getting in to double figures. The main wrecker for Joes were the veteran Roshan Mannikkawasa running through the top with figures of 05-00-16-3 wickets. Young Gayan Ferdi and Gavin B. bowled well too. MAIN GAME SCORE CARD:

Some Highlights & Details about the game:

  • After lapse of many years, Joe-Pete game was played at the King-City as per invitation and request made by the Royal-Thomian group.
  • Joes captained by Dhanuka Pathirana & Petes were led by Clement Fernando, both played in the first XI teams for their respective schools. Dhanuka Captained SJC in 2000
  • Other First Eleven cricketer’s in the teams – Srimantha Wijeyeratne (SPC & SL U-19), Nigel Issacs & Brian Rajadurai & Veteran players Rajive Benedict (Combined Schools, Western Province, SL President’s XI) & Ray Lord.
  • Trevin Bastianpillai is trying a come back to the Canadian national team, currently playing in the NCL games. (01 half ton against his name)
  • Srimantha Wijeyeratne, represented Canada in 2012 against USA in Florida with his fellow mate from SPC, Ruvindu Gunasekera (National Player) missing the ‘Big-Match’ due to NCL game that day.
