The hallmark of their success has been a commitment to excellence. The two schools enjoy a unique bond of friendship and goodwill that has grown stronger over the years. The following is the history of both schools compiled from various news items and historical material published in the souvenirs of the two schools.  SJC BLDGSt. Joseph's College is a Catholic educational institution that was established in 1896 by French missionaries, with Rev Christopher Ernst Bonjean playing a leading role. The college has over 4000 students with a staff of over 200. Distinguished former students include Cardinal Thomas Cooray the first Cardinal from Sri Lanka, President Ranasinghe Premadasa and Niranjan Deva-Aditya, the first person in history to be born in one continent (Asia) and elected to parliament in another continent (UK). The motto of the college is "Fiat Lux in Scientia et Virtute", meaning " Let there be light through Knowledge and Virtue" in Latin.

In 1892, the idea of a Catholic College emerges with the proposal of the Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Fr. Christopher Bonjean. On 6 January 1892, a pastoral letter was sent to all the priests espousing the desirability of building a Catholic College at St. Mary’s College premises at Mattakkuliya. In April 1892, a public meeting was held to collect funds and discuss the plans for the Catholic College.

Thereafter 27 acres of Land called the ‘uplands’ was bought by the Archbishop for this project, from the government. Later however, this land was bought back by the government with compensation, and the Catholic Church bought a land at Maradana in Darley Road from an Egyptian called Arabi Pasha for the College building.

On 12 December 1894 the foundation stone was laid by the papal delegate for Asia Rev. Msgr, Zalesbbi. In 1896, on 2 March 1896, St. Joseph’s College Colombo was declared open with 211 students in the school proper and 96 students in the preparatory school with Very Rev. Fr. Charles Collin as the First Rector. In November 1896, on 2 March, the College building was formally declared open by Governor of Ceylon West Redgeway and was blessed by Most Rev. Msgr, Zalesbbi, in the presence of the Archbishop Rt. Rev. Fr. Melizan O.M.I.

The Rector‘s office, the College office and the classrooms were all housed in the first building – the Clock Tower building of the College. The College Magazine was started in 1905. The Bonjean Hall was the third building to be completed. Fr. Charles Lytton, the second Rector, planned and supervised the building project of the Bonjean Hall.

Fr. Emil Nicholas O.M.I. was the third Rector appointed in 1910. To Fr. Emil Nicholas goes the credit of primary work on the first Religious Association of the College – the Guild of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In 1914, there was the appointment of the great educationist, scientist and efficient administrator Fr. Maurice J. Legoc O.M.I. the fourth Rector. In 1933 the present Primary building – originally named “The Maurice Block” was constructed. This building was an exact copy of the Bonjean Hall was declared open by Most Rev. Fr. Marques.

The next massive building was the (south Wing) a two-storied building to house the classrooms. During Fr. Maurice Legoc’s tenure of office, there was emphasis of the science subjects in the curriculum, Fr. Legoc’s favourite subject was Botany. His own publication “Tropical Botany” was used as a text book in O’ Level classes in India and Sri Lanka. In 1930, Fr. Maurice Legoc introduced a scheme of scholarships to the under privileged students.

On 19 March 1929, the foundation stone for the College Chapel was laid by the Archbishop of Colombo. The College Chapel is a fitting memorial to Fr. Maurice Legoc.

The southern end of the Primary building an exact copy of the Grotto in Lourdes was built. In 1940, the Very Rev. Fr. Peter A. Pillai (fifth Rector) was appointed. In 1947 – 27 February, due to the World War 2, the College buildings were taken over by the Army. The College was in ‘exile’ from 1942 to 1946, branches of the College were housed in Homagama, Kalaniya, Gampaha and later at Borella.

On 30 July 1952, the swimming pool was declared open by Lord Soulbury, the Governor General of Sri Lanka. after the era of Fr. Peter A. Pillai, Rev. W. L. A. Don Peter (sixth Rector) was appointed as the Rector of St. Joseph’s College in 1959. Fr. Don Peter was the first diocesan priest to hold this responsible post.

In 1960, after the take over of the schools by the Government the financial support was stopped by the government. The College became a private, non fee levying school.

To uplift the financial situation of the College, Fr. W. L. A. Peter founded the Welfare Association, and also started a pre-school for St. Joseph’s. After the tenure of the Sinhala scholar, Fr. W. L. A. don Peter, Rev. Fr. Mervyn Weekakkody (seventh Rector) was given the task of being Chief Executive of St. Joseph’s. after a brief period, Fr. Weerakkody retired as Rector and in 1974, Rev. Fr. Quintus Fernando (eighth Rector) was appointed as Rector. FR. Quintus Fernando was called the architect of the green revolution at St. Joseph’s. He gave pride of pace to agriculture. The agro 74 was a great exhibition which displayed agricultural plots and stressed the importance of agriculture in the school curriculum.

The ‘Open air stadium’ was constructed during the era of Fr. Quintus. The cricket ‘Tuft Pitch’ became a reality during Fr. Quintus’s tenure of office. On 19 September 1977, the Hon. Ranasinghe Premdasa, the first old boy Prime Minister was felicitated by the Josephian family. The work of the Premadasa Pavilion was directed by Fr. Quintus Fernando.

In 1979, Fr. Neville Emmanuel (ninth Rector) was appointed as Rector. During the era of Fr. Neville he tried his best to re-introduce the Catholic atmosphere in the College. Fr. Neville started the scheme of granting incentives to teachers based on punctuality, attendance, good teaching etc. Fr. Neville initiated the sports council, to improve standards in the sports arena. In May 1983, Rev. Fr. B. Stanley Abeysekara was appointed as the 10th Rector of St. Joseph’s College.

To provide an opportunity for deserving under-privileged students to study at St. Joseph’s, a grade 5 scholarship examination was inaugurated in the College. On the results of this examination these students were give an opportunity to study at St. Joseph’s College. In 1987 Thomas Cardinal Cooray, a past student of the College was conferred a very special honour – ‘Deva Dharma Keethisiri Uttunga Vidyala Puthra’.

During the era of Fr. Stanley Abeysekara, the following additions and renovations to the college buildings were completed with funds provided by the Welfare Association and Old Boys.

(a) A two storied building was completed. The top-story for the classrooms, and the ground floor for the sick room, boarders’ refectory and modern kitchen.

(b) An auditorium was built where the Chemistry labs were housed.

On 3 October 2005, Sylvester Ranasinghe was appointed as 12th Rector of St. Joseph’s College. A systematic staff development programme was introduced at St. Joseph’s by the Rector. During Ranasinghe’s era, different age groups of past students started undertaking different projects for the welfare of the College – innovations and refurbishment of the different buildings were undertaken by the old boys under the direction of the Rector. One significant restoration was the Bonjean Hall undertaken by the Old Boys' Union at a cost of over Rs. 12 m. The dormitory, classrooms were restored and renovated by old boys.

Computerizing different aspects of school administration and curriculum has been completed.

The present college

The school functions as an "assisted school" with substantial state funding but mainly from its old boy unions worldwide

Situated in the heart of the city, its set of buildings cover 12 acres (49,000 m2) and comprise a sports complex, and a swimming pool that is built to Olympic Standards.

The school prepares students for local Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations in Sinhalese, Tamil and English Mediums. In 1996 the latest branch School of St. Joseph's College was opened in Enderamulla, Wattala, 15 km from Colombo. Another branch school that has become a leading Catholic school in the country is St Peter's College, Colombo. Previously known as St. Joseph's South, it was built to cater to the families in the southern part of Colombo who failed to admit their sons to St. Joseph's Colombo, which has now become their main rivals and compete in sports and other activities which are known as "Battle of the Saints" in Sri Lanka. In 2009 st Peter's won the battle after 30 years.

The most important date in the history of the college is April 8th 1927. The College estamblished its own identity that day. The Wellawatte branch of St. Joseph 's College Colombo was registered as a separate secondary school by Gazette notification No: 7575 of 2nd April, 1927 with the name St. Peter's College, Wellawatte.

The celebrations in connection with the re-naming of the College had been held on Wednesday, 29th June with the feast of St. Peter with a high mass sung by Very. Rev. Fr. M. J. Le Goc assisted by Rev. Fr. Morel and Theobald Silva. After mass, a colourful ceremony took place on the lawn in front of the college. The College flag with the colours blue, white and gold was blessed by Rev. Fr. Le Goc and hoisted.

Golden Jubilee 1922 – 1972

The year 1972 dawned with memories of that historic and glorious day when St. Peter's was inaugurated on 18th January 1922. It was celebrated with jubilation, thanks giving and a bit of reflection of the five decades that had passed. Teachers, parents, old boys, benefactors and the students had a reason to celebrate the fifty years of endeavour and achievement.

The celebrations commenced with a re-enactment of the event with 200 Josephians walking along Darley Road to the Maradana Railway Station and the train stopped at the vary same place as it did fifty years ago when they were being led by Fr. Maurice Le Goc along Kinross Avenue. The Josephians were led by their Rector Rev. Fr. Mervyn Weerakkody, Rev. Fr. Marcellinc Jayakody and Rev. Fr. Lucien Dep and were welcomed by the Peterite Band playing both college anthems. Lt. Heraclitus Jayasekera of St. Peter's was there with the Peterites to welcome them. Mr. J. A. A. Perera an Old Josephian, the only surviving person who had participated in the 1922 event was there too. The Rector Rev. Fr. Theodore Peiris welcomed the Josephians and a special Assembly was held in the Quadrangle. The celebration concluded on 22nd January, 1922 with the Thanksgiving Mass concelebrated by His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray, Archbishop of Colombo.

Diamond Jubilee 1922 – 1982

Monday, 18th January, 1982 St Peter's recorded its sixty years of service in the field of education since the Archbishop Coudert blessed and opened the new school, St. Joseph 's College South in 1922. The occasion was celebrated in a fitting manner with a large and representative congregation that attended the concelebrated thanksgiving mass held in the open air college quadrangle. The Mass was held in the presence of sixty priests who concelebrated the mass with the Chief celebrant His Lordship Oswald Gomis, the auxiliary Bishop of Colombo. His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray, Archbishop Emeritus of Colombo and their Lordship Frank Marcus Fernando and Edmund Fernando O.M.I. were also present.

Due to the great strides made in a short time in the fields of studies, sports and the improvement in discipline under the leadership of Fr. Wickremasinghe resulted in large the number of applications being received for new admissions. In order to cope this situation, two new houses were added in the Diamond Jubilee year, Basil House named after the second rector Rev. Fr. Basil A. Wiratunga O.M.I. and Arthur House named after the third Rector Rev. Fr. Arthur N. Fernando. These houses participated for the first time in the Diamond Jubilee athletic Meet held on June, 26th 1982.

In the diamond Jubilee year, the College Cadet platoon was re-introduced after a lapse of twenty years. More significant however was the elevation on the 15th July, 1982 of the first Old boy Bishop, Rev. Fr. Dr. Henry Joy Gunawardene as the first Bishop of the new Diocese of Anuradhapura – He paid an official visit to College and was given a fitting reception. Also, the Nancy Emily Wickremasinghe Scholarship was established in the Diamond Jubilee Year which was awarded to the best student entering University presented by a loyal Old boy Mr. Anton Wickremasinghe, Chairman of the Film Corporation. The diamond Jubilee celebration came to a close with the prize giving held on 3rd of December, 1982, where His Excellency J.R. Jayawardene President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka was the Chief Guest. On this day the College hall was named as the 'Nicholas Perera Hall' after its builder. The plaque was unveiled by President J.R. Jayawardene.

October 2014 – The Josephians took an evening off to celebrate their recent success and felicitated five of their brightest stars that illuminated the entire Lankan skies.

The event took place at the Water’s Edge.

Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel – Rector, Sports Council and Cricket Advisory Committee of St. Joseph’s College felicitated Josephian cricket stars who are currently representing Sri Lanka’s National Team in a glamorous event that was held at Waters Edge on 15 October. Master Sadeera Samarawickrama, the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2014 and Sri Lanka Youth team player, was also recognised for his great achievements and for being the sixth Josephian Schoolboy Cricketer in the history of St. Joseph’s Cricket.

The event, which was sponsored by Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC), was very well attended. Former Sri Lankan Cricket Captains Michael Tissera, Anura Tennekoon, Arjuna Ranatunga, Aravinda De Silva, Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene. MAINTAINING DIGNITY & DECORUM

DIGNITY IV

The messages that we give to others is in a combination of actions and words. Once spoken, harmful things cannot be taken back and instead can create a darkness for all. Elevate yourself above the realm where negativity exists and dwells. Make a vow to live your life with dignity and decorum so that it can be the platform for your light.

CHOOSE TO WALK AWAY

There will be those that want to stir the pot and embroil you in their cause. Examine what their purpose is and if it doesn’t bring positive, turn around and walk away. They will continue to try to draw others in, but for you it will not bring you hope. This is the life they have chosen and you are not required to participate in it. In taking a higher path you can continue on your own quest.

SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mulling in the details can entrench us in confusion. It can cause frustration and the loss of thought and in that we can lose our way. Step outside the darkened clouds and look out to view the larger scope of things. In this you can tap into your calm and reach out in a positive way. In dignity and honor you can live your life and know in your heart you chose true.

In taking a higher path you can continue on your own quest.

1965 Big Match: Travis Fernando leads Peterites to 6 wicket victory

Posted on 13 September 2017 by admin

1965 Cricket XI – St. Peter's College

St. Peter's College was led by Travis Fernando and had Darrell Wimalaratne and Charlitha Goonasena opening batting. In batting order Peter de Niese followed at No.3 – Chris Harridge #4 – skipper Travis Fernando #5 – Aubrey Paternott #6 – C. Christoffelsz # 7 – Everard Hoffman # 8 – Tony Opatha # 9 – Rodney Paternott #10 and Mervyn Fernando (skipper's brother) at # 11.

The Big Match was played on March 19 & 20, 1965, at St. Peter's College grounds at Bambalapitiya. St. Peter's romped home to a resounding 6 wicket victory thanks to a terrific bowling spell by skipper Travis Fernando who had a match bag of 11 wickets for 89 runs. St. Joseph's College was captained by Christoper Moreira and included Polycarp Wijesekera & Brian Perera as openers. Skipper Moreira came in at #3 – Alan de Costa at #4 – Wicket-Keeper Sunil Athukorale at #5 – Victor Vimalasingham at #6 – Bede Johnpillai #7 – Sarath Wanigasekera #8 – A. Rasanayagam #9 – Anil Peiris #10 and T. Mitchell at #11.

Alan de Costa, 40, Polycard Wijesekera, 21, Victor Vimalasingham, 33, batted best for the Josephians who were bundled out for 130 runs. Skipper Travis Fernando 5/45 and Peter de Niese 3/25 routed the Joes. In reply the Peterites scored 201 runs helped by a painstaking 68 runs by opener Charlitha Goonasena, Aubrey Paternott, 25, Tony Opatha, 42, Rodney Paternott, 23. The Joes had a deficit of 71 runs to clear and fared better in the 2nd innings scoring 164 runs with Polycarp Wijesekera, 36, Alan de Costa, 22, Victor Vimalasingham, 50, Sarath Wanigasekera, 20. Once again skipper Travis Fernando proved to be the Joes downfall as mesmerized the batsmen by taking 6/44 while Rodney Paternitt 3/31 provided ample support.

St. Peter's College needed 93 runs to win and the game was all but won when Darrell Wimalaratne, 29, and Charlitha Goonasena, 27, were associated in a match winning opening stand. An unbeaten knock of 31 by Aubrey Paternott saw the Peterites win the 1965 Battle of the Saints by 6 wickets.

Where are they today?

Tony Opatha (SPC) later won his 'Ceylon Cap' and did yeoman service for Sri Lanka Cricket. To my knowledge Polycarp Wijesekera and Sunil Athukorale live in Canada, and Sarath Wanigasekera in USA. In the Peterite team Mervyn Fernando lives in California, Rodney & Aubrey Paternott; Everard Hoffman, Peter de Niese have made Australia their home. Skipper Travis Fernando is still involved with alumni events at St. Peter's College and participates in the Pre 70s get-togethers every year.

83rd Josephian-Peterite Encounter ends in draw

Posted on 07 March 2017 by admin

The 83rd Josephian-Peterite cricket encounter ended in a draw. The game was played over two days at the Colombo Oval.

Given an impossible target of 181 to win in 15 overs, St. Peter’s College openers Santhush Gunathilake and Anishka Perera gave it all they got to get to 99 for no loss before the 83rd Battle of the Blues against St Joseph’s College ended in a draw at the P Sara Oval yesterday.

Gunathilake hit a brilliant unbeaten 52 off 44 balls with six fours and Anishka Perera a superb 41 not out but it was a herculean task to scale and when play ended the Peterites were still 82 runs short of victory.

In the process Gunathilake crossed the 1000-run mark for the season – the second player to do so in a Big Match after Marlon von Hagt, the St Anthony’s College Kandy captain who achieved that milestone in 1983 against Trinity College.

Overcast conditions prevailed throughout the whole of the last session and St. Peter’s made a vain effort to chase the target in dwindling light.

Incidentally, the encounter ended as the 61st draw in the 83-year-old history of the two schools at cricket.

The Peterites resuming from their overnight score of 138 for 5 fought back to compile 188 for 8 in their allotted 60 overs.

Vice captain cum Sri Lanka under 19 cricketer Manelker de Silva struck a swashbuckling 52 and Ranmith Jayasena scored a patient 25.

Shivan Perera, son of former Peterite captain Asanga Perera chipped in with a valuable unbeaten 12 runs.

After his batting performance Manelker spearheaded the St. Peters attack claiming two wickets along with left-arm spinner Miflal Ameen who finished with 3 for 42 of 20 overs as St. Joseph’s tottering at 114 for 7 wickets at one stage finally declared at 163 for 8 wickets in 76 overs. Manelker’s match haul of 5 wickets and 51 runs earned him the best all rounder of the match award.

Joes lost wickets at regular intervals. Jehan Daniel the first innings centurion was the only batsman to retaliate by scoring 42. Captain Harin Cooray and opener Thashan Perera chipped in with 25 runs each. Opener Cameron Duruge failed for the second successive day collecting a pair in the big match being caught behind by captain Lakshina off right arm pacie Santhush Gunathilake.

Peterite skipper Lakshina Rodrigo was adjudged the best fielder and Nipun Sumanasinghe of Joes received the best bowler’s award.

The all important man of the match award went to Josephian Jehan Daniel.

St. Joseph’s – 205 all out in 57.2 overs: Jehan Daniel 124*, Shewon Fonseka 26, Pahan Perera 25, Santhush Gunathilaka 3/34, Manelkar De Silva 3/35.

St. Peter’s – 188/8 in 60 overs: Shalith Fernando 47, Manelkar De Silva 51, Ranmith Jayasena 25, Nipun Sumanasinghe 4/49.

St. Joseph’s (2nd Inn) – 163/8 Dec in 77 overs: Jehan Daniel 42, Thashan Perera 25, Harin Cooray 25, Manelkar De Silva 2/21, Miflal Ameen 3/42.

St. Peter’s (2nd Inn) – 99 for no loss in 15 overs: Santhush Gunathilaka 52*, Anishka Perera 41*.

Sri Lanka under 19 cricketer Jehan Daniel played the role of savior to rescue St Joseph’s College from dire straits at 10 for 5 to a respectable 205 on the opening day of the 83rd Battle of the Saints encounter against St Peter’s College at the P Sara Oval yesterday.

By the close the game was evenly poised with St Peter’s replying with 138 for five wickets.

Daniel’s magnificent century saved St. Joseph’s the blushes and enabled them to take the upper hand.

Daniel came to the crease with his side tottering at 10 for 5 after skipper Harin Cooray had won the toss and elected to bat first. However in the first session’s play things go the way the Joes would have planned.

Under 19 player cum Peterite vice-captain and right arm fast bowler Manelker de Silva and his new ball partner Santhush Gunathilake combined together to rip through the batting line up.

Gunathilake ran through the Joes top order by making the early breakthrough in his first two overs when he dismissed openers Cameron Duruge and took the prize wicket of Nipun Sumanasinghe who has scored 1000 runs this season.

Manelker De Silva added salt to the wound of the Josephians when he got rid of Dineth Madurawela for one as St. Joseph’s slid to 3 for 3.

To make matters worse for the Joes both Thashan Perera and Havin Perera were run out due to brilliant fielding and half the Joes side was out for 10.

A sixth wicket partnership of 56 between Daniel and wicket keeper Shevan Fonseka (26) addressed the slump. The stand was ended with another run out of Fonseka following a direct throw from Ranmith Jayasena, son of Panadura SC cricketer Mangala Jayasena.

Daniel and Jehan Fernandopulle son of former Benedictine cricketer Marlon Fernandopulle took the score to 95 before Jehan was run out for 14 by Manelker de Silva’s brilliant fielding.

Daniel counter attacked making use of three dropped chances to score an unbeaten 124 off 116 balls that included 12 boundaries and five sixes. He was involved in a face saving partnership of 93 runs for the eighth wicket with left hander Pahan Perera (25) that saw St. Joseph’s to their final total.

The eighth wicket partnership between the pair broke a 67-year old record for St. Joseph’s of 66 between Adolphus Silva and Milroy Brohier in 1950.

For the Peterites who batted after tea Shalith Fernando their number four batsman hit a fine 47 before being dismissed in the penultimate over of the day. However vice-captain Manelker de Silva hung around for a solid unbeaten 40 by the close.

83rd Josephian-Peterite Encounter at Colombo Oval on March 3rd & 4th

Posted on 02 March 2017 by admin

SPC XI 2017SJC XI 2017In Sri Lanka, March madness has set in with a few “big matches” scheduled for the first week-end. The 83rd encounter of the “Battle of the Saints” takes pride of place and will be played at the old familiar Colombo Oval (P. Sara Stadium) on March 3rd & 4th. St. Joseph’s lead the series with 12 wins, last being in 2008 under the captaincy of Ruwantha Fernandopulle. Peterites trail behind with 10 wins including the controversial win last year thanks to a sporting decision by the Josephian Rector, Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel. This writer was at the game last year from start to finish and witnessed first hand extreme behaviour from a group of unruly spectators who disrupted play each time a wicket fell and/or a boundary was scored. The chaos that prevailed deprived the Peterites from earning a deserved victory. After the game ended Fr. Travis in consultation with the Peterite Rector Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin and some seniors from both schools awarded the 82nd encounter to St. Peter’s College, a magnanimous gesture. Let us forget this ever happened and move forward this year to a fair game played in the highest traditions of the “Battle of the Saints” – in a spirit we are used to in the past. After all, we are two brothers of one family!

The squads: St. Peter’s College: Lakshina Rodrigo (Captain), Manelker de Silva, Santhush Gunatilleke, Shalith Fernando, Vinul Gunawardena, Anishka Perera, Ranmith Jayasena, Sulakshan Fernando, Shivan Perera, Prabasara Herath, Nipunaka Fonseka, Chathura Obesekere, Sachin Silva, Dinith Anjula, Laseh Rodrigo, Ravindu Silva, Banuka de Silva, Mohammed Ameen.

St. Joseph’s College: Harin Cooray (Captain), Dario Dassanayake, Revan Kelley, Nipun Sumanasinghe, Dineth Madurawala, Jehan Daniel, Shevon Fonseka, Pahan Perera, Thashan Perera, Havin Perera, Ruchira Ekanayake, Jehan Fernandopulle, Dineth Jayakody, Sachitha Mahindasinhe, Kavindu Jayatissa, Cameron Durage, Lakshan Gamage, Sheran Rassool, Avishka Fernando, Sachitha de Silva.

The two rectors – Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin, Rector of St. Peter’s College and his counterpart at St. Joseph’s College Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel are both strong administrators but open minded and fair in their management style. Both have showed tremendous leadership qualities and inspired the students to respect true values of discipline and education. A week or two back Fr. Trevor Martin had this to say at a media briefing ahead of the “big match”.

“Winning and losing is all part and parcel of the game, but what is more important is that the game is played in the true spirit of sportsmanship which has been a hallmark of this big match over the years”.

The Josephians are led this year by all-rounder Harin Cooray, son of Hiran Cooray who played for St. Joseph’s College from 1980-1982. Today, Cooray Sr., is best known as the dynamic chairman of Jetwing Hotels, a company founded in 1970 by his late father Mr. Herbert Cooray. The Peterites are led by Lakshina Rodrigo, right-handed batsman who has had a terrific season with the bat. It is important not to have a repeat of last year’s unruly crowd behaviour. The battle lines are drawn and may the best team have the advantage at the end of the day.

83rd Battle of the Saints: This can be a nailbiter – no quarter given or asked

As it happens every year during the month of March the saints are ready to march on the cricket field for their annual “Battle of the Saints”.  This is the 83rd in the series to be played on March 3 and 4 at the P. Sara Stadium and no doubt with both the teams fielding talented players there is bound to be a close tussle.

The Josephians lead the series with 12 wins with their last win being in 2008 under the leadership of Ruwantha Fernandopulle while the Peterites have ten wins having won the encounter last year under Vinu Mohotti.

In fact it was the sportsmanship of St Joseph’s rector Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel who awarded the win to St Peter’s due to the crowd invasion when the Peterites was on the verge of winning the game.

But the organisers this time out, the joint committee of the two schools are not going to leave any stone unturned and trouble makers beware as no room will be left and stern action will be taken as the relevant officials have been advised to take necessary action.

Both teams this year are unbeaten.  Peterites led by Lakshina Rodrigo have a better record.  After 18 games they have registered five outright wins. They are against St Anthony’s Wattala, Maris Stella, St Mary’s Kegalle, St Sebastian’s Moratuwa and St Benedict’s.

Josephians led by Harin Cooray have played 18 matches has been able to win three of them against St Patrick’s Jaffna, Maris Stella and Bandaranayake MV Gampaha.

Nevertheless for any school their traditional encounter is something special and the “Battle of the Saints” is going to be a tussle for supremacy between the two schools.

Let’s also not forget that in most of the matches played in the series have been dominated by the underdogs. This year with both the teams well balanced it will be hard to predict an outcome as the two teams’ posses and are oozing with talented players.

The Josephian batting will revolve around their leading run getter Nipun Sumanasinghe who had the honour of being the first player this season to reach the 1000 runs mark and has made three tons and five half tons.

To support him there is Dineth Madurawala who has made over 800 runs which includes four tons and two half tons and Shevon Fonseka the other player to crack a ton and has scored over 650 runs.

Pahan Perera, Jehan Fernandopulle and Jehan Daniels are the three batsmen that the Petes will have to keep an eye. Pahan though making over 550 runs is a player with better potential but has not lived up to expectations and he is capable of doing the needful in this game while much will be expected from the Jehan double.

Skipper Harin who ended as the top bowler of the side with 77 scalps to his credit will spearhead the bowling attack and the responsibility is no doubt going to be a burden to him.

The skipper will look for support from Ruchira Ekanayake, Nipun Sumanasinghe, Havin Perera and Dineth Jayakody to curtail the strong Peterite batting line up.

The Peterites on the other hand will bank their batting on two players Santhush Gunatilleke and skipper Lakshina who both have been in the runs right through out the season.

Santhush in fact was unfortunate to miss out in achieving 1000 runs for the season when he was dismissed for 85 needing 128 runs and fell short by 43 runs.

Santhush ended with 957 runs and has two tons and seven half tons, so he will no doubt be looking forward to make a memorable big match and will be the one for the Josephians to watch.

Skipper Lakshina along with two others Manelker de Silva and Anishka Perera are the other centurions of the side. Apart from the ton Lakshina has made eight half tons while Manelker who has scored over 575 runs and Anishka 500, has three half tons each

Then there is Shalith Fernando who has scored over 700 runs inclusive of seven half tons along with the above players along with Ranmith Jayasena and Vinul Gunawardena are going to be a thorn in the flesh for the Josephian bowlers

Left arm spinner Mohamed Ameen is their trump card in the bowling department and the youngster has been in the wickets on regular basis and ended up by achieving the magical 100 wickets in a season, the only player to do it so far and he could be the match winner along with Santhush and skipper Lakshina.

The support of Chathura Obeysekera who has taken over 70 wickets and make shift bowlers Santhush Gunatilleke, Sachin Silva and Manelker de Silva would be looked forward to curtail the Josephian batting.

Looking back at the cricketers who donned the Sri Lanka jersey from the two institutions, the Josephians produced Angelo Mathews, Chaminda Vaas, Thisara Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Ashley de Silva and Michael Vandort to name a few and the Peterites produced Roy Dias, Rumesh Ratnayake, Russel Arnold, Vinothan John, Amal Silva, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Malinda Warnapura and Angelo Perera.

The chief guest at the 83rd “Battle of the Saints” will be Kitto Fernandopulle who led the Peterites in the year 1979.

The two day encounter will be followed by the 43rd limited over encounter which is played for the Fr. Peter A. Pillai trophy which is scheduled to be played on March 25 at SSC ground which is returning back to venue after 1994.

In this segment too the Josephians are leading with 21 wins to the 19 by the Peterites with two matches being washed out.
