80th “Battle of the Saints” ends in tame draw

Posted on 08 March 2014 by admin

JOE PETE PLATINUM

The 80th Josephian-Peterite encounter did not bring a desired result. Rain played a major part in this debacle as 29 overs were lost on the first day of play. The venue P.Saravanamuttu Colombo Oval once again proved to be the ideal hunting ground for the big match. Josephians and Peterites all over the world were treated to live streaming of the match courtesy of ThePapare.Com – a live feed sponsored by Dialog. Kudos to Dialog for this magnanimous gesture which I believe will bring an appreciable return on investment for the goodwill.

The 80th "Battle of the Saints" began bright enough after the heavy rains that poured the previous evening.

Precisely at 8.45 the Chief Guest Asoka Jayamanna, a past Josephian captain (1988) and current MD of the Ramada Hotel, Katunayake, arrived led by the smartly clad Josephian western band. The hoisting of the National Flag by the chief guest, the singing of the National anthem, the hoisting of the College flags by the respective Rectors, Rev. Frs. Trevor Martin of St. Peter's and Travis Gabriel of St. Joseph's took place which was followed by the introduction of the teams and officials to the chief guest.

The Peterite captain, Kavinda de Tissera called wrong at the toss that followed but the Josephian captain, Dylan Fernandopulle chose to put the Peterites in first and the match started promptly at 9.30.

The Josephian opening bowlers, Fabian Fernando and Trishan Tanuja opened their respective overs with wide balls but settled later to controlling the swinging ball. The first to go was the prolific run getter for the Peterites, Dineth Thimodya for 10 with the score at 27 and then Hashan Wanasekera for 18 with the score at 44.

It was then that the crowd was treated to some excellent batting by the Peterite vice captain, Janith Liyanage and No 4 batsman Chandula Jayamanne. They cut, pulled, drove all round the wickets to post a 151 run stand for the 3rd wicket, with no less than 10 sixes hammered between them. This partnership fell short by 22 runs of equaling a previous record of 173 between Rohan Bultjens and Kitto Fernandopulle who incidentally is the current Asst. Coach of the Peterites and a cousin of the Josephian Captain. The Partnership between Liyanage and Jayamanne which was unbroken at lunch ended after the resumption with Liyanage's dismissal for 80 with the score at 195.

Jayamanne continued merrily to earn a well deserved century but was eventually out for 116. Jayamanne faced 131 balls and had 9 hits to the ropes with 5 towering sixes much to the delight of the Peterite schoolboys who were their in numbers to cheer their heroes. Going for runs later in the inning, the Peterites saw the rest of the batting collapse and were eventually all out for 282 in the last of the allotted overs (60th over).

The Joes had an inauspicious start to their inning as their captain, Fernandopulle went without bothering the scorers with the scoreboard reading only 4. They lost the other opener Yashan Samarasinghe for 8 with the score on 39 but like the Peterites, thier 3rd wicket pair of Sadeera Samarawickerma and Pathum Madushanka steadied the inning with an unbroken partnership of 53 runs with Samarawickrema not out on a well made 62 and Madushanka not out on 17. Incidentally Samarawickrema and Madushanka are both members of the Sri Lanka under 19 squad.

The Joes had reached 92 for 2 facing 21.3 overs -and only 81.3 of the scheduled 105 overs bowled- when bad light stopped play around 4.40 p.m. with rain coming down soon thereafter.

SPC 282 & 181 – SJC 251/8 wickets decl.

On day-2 Saturday – the sun was shining bright when the Josephian overnight batsmen Samarawickrema and Madushanka walked in to continue thier 53-run partnership the day before.

SCOREBARD

80th Battle of the Saints

Underdogs St. Joseph’s College took the bull by the horns as their team hounded St. Peter’s College like a pack of wolves to come out with flying colours and draw their 80th Battle of the Saints big match cricket encounter at the P Sara Oval in Colombo yesterday. The Josephians turned the match on its head and took all 20 Peterite wickets to embarrass their opponents who graced the field as the better team to call the shots.

The Peterites were never able to hide the fact that the Josephians by declaring their first innings at 251 for 8, 31 runs behind, took the match away. That the Peterites eventually managed to save face and salvage a draw after slumping to 87 for 7 at one stage, a lead of just 118 runs with 44 overs left, was not necessarily a miracle but made possible by late order batsman Oshan Karunaratne who was the only batsman to stand in the way of the Josephians with a masterful innings of 66 as the rest caved in.

The Josephian bowlers did nothing extra-ordinary other than bowl keeping to the basics which was enough to dismantle the boastful Peterite batting line-up.
The only blemish of the Josephians may have been that they just lacked the killer punch to finish off the Peterites at 106 for 8 in the second innings when Karunaratne and Sahan Nanayakkara came together and then put on a record 60 runs for the ninth wicket.

That the Josephians bagged three of the five awards on offer was ample testimony to the fact that tables were turned in the match which was most memorable for spinner Aravinda Akurugoda who finished with nine wickets for the best bowler’s prize while his mate and fast bowler Fabian Fernando picked up the best allrounder’s trophy after clouting three sixes and two fours in one over from Peterite freshman off-spinner Thaneesha Weerakoon.Peterite batsmen Chandula Jayamanne and Janith Liyanage bagged awards for man-of-the-match and best batsman respectively while Josephian wicket-keeper Kalpa Ravihara was adjudged the best fielder.

The Island report on Day-1: 80th Battle of the Saints

Posted on 07 March 2014 by admin

A batting failure during the Under-19 tournament proper, Chandula Jayamanne justified his late inclusion in the team with a valuable century as St. Peter’s posted 282 runs before Sri Lanka Under-19 bat Sadeera Samarawickrama exhibited his prowess to guide St. Joseph’s to 92 for two wickets at close on day one of the 80th Battle of the Saints encounter at P. Sara Oval in Colombo on Friday.

Jayamanne was dropped from the Petes First XI team after a series of failures and the team management took a huge gamble when he was selected ahead of Sanjula Madushan (with 565 runs during the season) for the annual Big Match. Yesterday, he took the opportunity with both hands as he joined deputy skipper Janith Liyanage to put on a 151 run stand for the third wicket. Put to bat formidable openers Dineth Thimodya and Hashan Wanasekara lost their wickets cheaply, but Jayamanne managed to guide Petes to safety. He scored 116 runs inclusive of nine fours and five sixes in 131 balls before being out caught and bowled by spinner Aravinda Akurugoda who rattled the late order with a six wicket haul.

Jayamanne’s century was only the fifth century by a Peterite in the series since 2000 and was the first after Shehan Fernando scored an unbeaten 159 runs in 2011. Liyanage scored 80 runs (in 91 balls) laced with six fours and three sixes.

Scoreboard II

In their essay Joes too lost their openers cheaply when speedsters Janith Liyanage and Chemila Obeysekera accounted for Yashan Samarasinghe and skipper Dylan Fernandopulle to leave Joes in trouble. But Samarawickrama, returning to the side after doing well in the Youth World Cup, managed to guide the team. Samarawickrama scored an unbeaten 62 runs in 56 balls (10x4s) and was involved in a 53-run stand with Pathum Madusanka when bad light forced umpires to stop play with more than an hours play remaining. While Samarawickrama was solid in his unbeaten knock reaching his half century in 46 balls, Madusanka lived dangerously against spinner Sahan Nanayakkara. Madusanka received life when he was dropped by Jayamanne at slips off the bowling of Nanayakkara.

PAPARESt. Joseph's won the toss and sent the Peterites into bat. After losing their openers at 27 (Dineth Thimodya for 10) and 44 (Hashan Warnasekera for 18) the Peterites consolidated and at lunch were on 157 for the loss of three wickets. Helped by a 151-run partnership by Janith Liyanage, 80, and Chandula Jayamanne, 116, St. Peter's ended up with a grand total of 282 runs in 59.5 overs. Liyanage and Jayamanne delighted the sold out crowd to some lusty hitting all round the wicket. Aravinda Akurugoda wrote himself into record books by taking 6 wickets for 75 runs for the Josephians.

St. Peters College 282 (59.5) Janith Liyanage 80, Chandula Jayamanne 116, Aravinda Akurugoda 6/75 Vs St. Josephs College 92/2 (21.3) Sadeera Samarawickrama 62* – 80th Battle of the Saints – At P.Sara Stadium – Stumps – Day 1.

80th Josephian-Peterite Encounter on March 7th & 8th, 2014, at the Colombo Oval

Posted on 07 March 2014 by admin

Restriction clause makes game somewhat interesting…: Joes and Petes out for decision.

The 80th annual cricket encounter between St.Joseph's College and St.Peter's College, also known as the 'Battle of the Saints' played for the Rev .Fr. Maurice Legoc Trophy will herald another series of 'big' encounters among schools. This match will be played on March 7th and 8th at the P. Sara Oval commencing at 9.30 am each day.

Both teams have taken a decision, like in the recent past to restrict the number of overs for 60 only in the first innings which has made a huge difference in the outcome of the game. With the restriction of the first innings to 60 overs system, it has made the match more interesting and result oriented. During the past six encounters there have been results on three occasions.

In the overall 79 big match series between the two schools, St.Joseph's have won 20 to the Peterites 17. The Joes last won in 2013 under Sachin Hewawasam and the Peterites last savoured a win in 2012 under under Shehan Fernando. The two teams seem to be on par with an unbeaten record, this season with the Joes winning three matches outright and the Peterites winning two.

For the Bambalapitiya school, Dineth Thimodya with 1000 runs including two centuries against D.S. Senanayake and Ananda and skipper Kavinda de Tissera (762 runs) also with two centuries and deputy Janith Liyanage (763) with a hundred have done the bulk of the scoring. Among the bowlers, Sahan Nanayakkara has captured over 85 wickets with his left-arm leg-spin and ably supported by off-spinner Vini Mohotty who has taken 42 wickets. Vice Captain Janith Liyanage, besides his batting, has taken over 30 wickets with his medium pace.

Courtesy: Ranjan Anandappa – Sunday Observer.

For the Joes skipper Dylan Fernandopulle has been the highest scorer (659) with a top-score of 90. Middle order batsman Pathum Madusanaka is their sole centurion (107). St.Joseph's were without the services of two of their key players Sadeera Samarawickrema and Priyamal Perera who were most of the time out with the under 19 team representing the country at the Under 19 Asia Cup and later the Under 19 World Cup. Both played in Dubai.

Priyamal Perera, in the seven matches he played for his school, has made 394 runs with four fifties and Samarawickrema in his seven matches, had scored 155 runs. Both, Samarawickrema and Perera will be available for their 'Big' encounter and their inclusion should make the Joes a stronger outfit while meeting their traditional rivals.. Joes bank on spinners The Joes will heavily depend on the spin of Aravinda Akurugoda who has taken over 40 wickets and Priyamal Perera with 26 wickets. Malshan Rodrigo and Hashindra Perera both with 29 wickets apiece should form an effective spin combination.

The highest individual score in the series is by former Peterite and Leicestershire professional Clive Inman who struck an unbeaten 204 in 1954. For the Joes, Hareen Silva scored an unbeaten 141 in the 2009 big match. Under the leadership of Kitto Fernandopulle in 1979, left hander Rohan Buultjens hit twin unbeaten hundreds (109 in the 1st innings and 100 n.o in the 2nd innings) a unique achievement difficult to surpass.

Josephian Shenal Warnakula holds the record for the best individual bowling effort. In the 1997 encounter Warnakula took 9 for 41, surpassing Peterite Dion Walles' 9 for 53 in 1947. Peterite Cyril Dias also took 9 for 64 wickets in an innings in 1933. Peterites Dinesh Kekulthota (8 for 16 in 1990) and Gerald Solomons also from Peter's had the bowling fiogures of 7 for 43 in the 1973 encounter. Besides Warnakula's 9 for 41, Rajive Benedict 8 for 6 in 1972 and Ranjith Malawana 8 for 57 in 1957 are notable bowling performances for the Josephians.

Nothing much to separate Joes and Petes
March 6, 2014, 10:14 pm

by Reemus Fernando

Prowess of two Sri Lanka Under-19 players in the batting department of St. Joseph’s College and aggressive top order batting of St. Peter’s College are among special features to watch when the arch rivals meet for the 80th time in the Battle of the Saints Big Match starting today at the P Sara Oval in Colombo.

There is nothing much to separate the two unbeaten teams after the two Sri Lanka Under-19 players Sadeera Samarawickrama and Priyamal Perera returned to reinforce Joes batting line up which looked slightly weaker than that of Petes’ in their absence.

Samarawickrama and Perera were the most successful batsmen for Sri Lanka Under-19 during the recently concluded ICC Youth World Cup. After doing well against strong bowling attacks of England, New Zealand, Pakistan, India and others in the Youth World Cup, it will be interesting to watch whether they could assist skipper Dylan Fernandopulle strive for a victory which has not come their way since Ruwantha Fernandopulle’s team won it in 2008.

Samarawickrama was the leading run scorer for Sri Lanka Under-19 during the Youth World Cup and the Joes who enjoyed his century in the last Big Match will be looking forward to a special treat from him this time as well.

Perera often helped Sri Lanka Under-19 come out from difficult situations with his sensible batting but after being reported for suspect bowling action during the ICC event, will the Joe-Pete fans be able to witness his off spinners? His coach Janaka Deegodagamage is confident that there is nothing wrong with his action and is not ‘hesitating to bowl’ his key spinner in the Battle of the Blues.

There were no Peterites in the Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup team but the annual Big match provides an opportunity for number of such potential players to showcase their prowess.

Generally it had been the spinners who had dominated this series during the recent past. If the trend continues, left-arm spinner Sahan Nanayakkara is the player to put your money on in the Petes’ team, while leg-spinner Aravinda Akurugoda and off spinner Hashindra Perera are likely to dominate Joes’ bowling if they decide to keep Priyamal out of the attack.

In the Petes’ formidable batting line up Dineth Thimodya is the batsman to watch. The left-hander has passed the 1000 runs milestone and has been aggressive against many an opponent this season.

Skipper Kavinda de Tissera (over 800 runs), Janith Liyanage (over 800 runs) and Hashan Wanasekara (over 500 runs) are the others who have excelled this season. In the bowling department, Nanayakkara (over 80 wickets) will have the support of Thaneesha Weerakoon and Chemila Obeysekara.

Joes batting largely revolved around skipper Dylan Fernandopulle this season. He is the only batsmen to top 600 runs for them with Samarawickrama and Priyamal being not available for most of the season. Duran de Alwis and Pathum Madusanka are the others to have impressed in the batting department.

Season performances:

St. Joseph’s played 16 matches, registered outright victories against D.S. Senanayake College, Maris Stella College and St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota and remained unbeaten in other matches.

St. Peter’s played 17 matches and recorded outright victories against De Mazenod College, Kandana and Isipatana College, while remaining unbeaten in other encounters.

The series tally stands at 12-9 in favour of Joes. St. Peter’s are the holders of the Rev. Fr. Maurice Legoc (OMI) Trophy having won it under the captaincy of Shehan Fernando in 2012.
